Student Visa – Your Path to Studying in Germany
If you come from a non-EU country and want to study in Germany, you generally need a student visa. This visa allows you to enter and stay in Germany for the purpose of studying at a German university.
Who Needs a Student Visa?
You need a visa if:
- You are not from the EU, EEA, or Switzerland
- You do not yet have a residence permit for Germany
- You want to study or prepare for studies in Germany, such as through a language course or preparatory college
Visa Requirements
To obtain a student visa, you must meet the following conditions:
- Admission from a German university or preparatory institution
- Proof of financial resources, such as a blocked account with at least €11,904 for 2026
- Health insurance with sufficient coverage
- Valid passport
- Motivation letter and possibly a CV
- Proof of language skills, in German or English depending on the program

- Standard visa fee: Approximately €75
- Reduced fee: For example, for applicants from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ukraine – €35
What You Can Do with the Visa

- Work 120 full days or 240 half days per year
- Take part-time jobs in the university sector

- Take up vocational training or full employment without permission
- Be self-employed or work permanently without the required permission
