Renting a Temporary Apartment in Germany

Renting a temporary apartment when moving to Germany can be a practical option, especially if you need time to find permanent accommodation. Temporary housing gives you a place to stay while you settle in, explore different areas, and complete important administrative tasks.

Advantages of Temporary Accommodation

  • Flexibility: A temporary apartment gives you time to get used to your new city before making a long-term housing decision.
  • Time to Explore: You can visit different neighborhoods and apartments and decide where you feel most comfortable.
  • Registration: Depending on the type of accommodation and rental arrangement, you may be able to register your address at the temporary apartment.
  • Cost Control: Temporary accommodation can help you avoid committing immediately to a long-term apartment that may not meet your needs.
  • Security: You have a place to stay while searching for permanent accommodation and completing the necessary administrative steps.

Landlord Confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)

A Wohnungsgeberbestätigung is a confirmation from your landlord or housing provider that you have moved into the specified accommodation.

It is generally required when registering your address with the local registration office (Bürgeramt or Einwohnermeldeamt).

The confirmation normally includes information such as:

  • Your name
  • The address of the accommodation
  • The move-in date
  • The name and address of the landlord or housing provider
  • The names of other people moving into the property, where applicable

Minimum Rental Duration for a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung

There is no general minimum rental duration that automatically determines whether a landlord must provide a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.

The obligation is generally connected to the actual move-in and the type of accommodation rather than simply the length of the rental contract.

If you are renting temporary accommodation, confirm in advance whether the landlord or accommodation provider will provide a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung if you need to register your address.

Important: Not every type of temporary accommodation allows you to register your address. Before booking, check whether Anmeldung is possible and whether the provider can issue the required Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.

Choosing Temporary Accommodation

Before renting a temporary apartment, check:

  • Whether Anmeldung is possible
  • Whether a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung will be provided
  • The minimum rental period
  • Whether utilities and internet are included
  • Whether the apartment is furnished
  • The total monthly cost and any additional fees
  • The cancellation and extension conditions

Temporary accommodation can be a useful first step when moving to Germany, giving you time to settle in and find a long-term home that meets your needs.
