Registration Office

Registering Your Address in Germany (Anmeldung)

When you move to Germany, you must register your address at the local registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt) within two weeks of moving in. This is required by law and ensures that your address is officially recorded.

Address registration is an important first step after moving to Germany, as you may need proof of registration for opening a bank account, taking out health insurance, signing an employment contract, applying for a residence permit, and other administrative processes.

To register, you usually need to book an appointment in advance and appear in person.

Documents Required for Address Registration

You will generally need to bring:

  • Valid identification, such as a passport or ID card
  • Confirmation of residence (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord or property owner

The Wohnungsgeberbestätigung confirms that you actually live at the address you are registering.

Once your registration is completed, you will receive a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung), which serves as official proof of your registered address.

When you register in Germany for the first time, your tax identification number (Steuer-ID) is also automatically requested and will be sent to you separately by post.

Important: Make sure you register within the required two-week period. Late registration can result in a fine.

How to Find the Responsible Registration Office

The office responsible for your registration depends on your place of residence. You can find the correct office through:

  • City or municipality website: Most local authorities provide information about the responsible registration office and available services.
  • Online search: Search for the Bürgeramt, Bürgerbüro, or Einwohnermeldeamt responsible for your address.
  • Telephone inquiry: Contact the general number of your city administration for assistance.
  • Federal portal: Federal government services can also help you find relevant administrative information.
  • Landlord: Your landlord may be able to tell you which registration office is responsible for your address.

How to Book an Appointment

There are generally two ways to book an appointment for address registration:

  • Online booking: Many cities offer online appointment systems through their official websites. For example, in Hamburg, appointments are handled through HamburgService.
  • Telephone booking: If no online appointments are available, you can contact the registration office by phone and ask about available appointments.

What to Do If No Appointments Are Available

In larger German cities, appointments can sometimes be fully booked for several weeks. If you cannot find an available appointment, check the booking system regularly because new appointments may become available when cancellations occur.

You can also contact the local registration office directly to ask about alternative options or available walk-in services.

Tip: Book your appointment as early as possible, especially if you are moving to a large city. Registration is often required before you can complete other important steps, such as opening a bank account or applying for a residence permit.
