Registration Certificate in Germany
Getting a registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung, Meldebescheinigung, or Anmeldebestätigung) is one of the first and most important administrative steps for expats moving to Germany.
What Is the Registration Certificate?
A registration certificate is an official document confirming your registered address in Germany. It can be issued to both expats and German citizens.
You may need your registration certificate for many administrative processes, especially when entering into contracts or applying for official services, such as:
- Applying for a residence permit
- Enrolling at a university
- Opening a bank account
- Taking out health insurance
- Getting a mobile phone contract
Note: Registering your address does not automatically give you the right to live or work in Germany. Depending on your nationality and circumstances, you may also need a residence permit.
How Do I Get a Registration Certificate?
You receive your registration certificate after completing your address registration at your local citizens’ office (Bürgeramt).
If you are required to register, you generally need to complete the registration within 14 days of moving into your new home.
Even if you are staying in Germany for a shorter period, registration may still be necessary in certain situations, particularly if you need to enter into contracts or complete administrative procedures.
Documents Required for Registration
When registering your address, you will generally need to provide:
- Valid proof of identity, such as a passport or ID card
- A Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (confirmation of residence) from your landlord
- Additional documents required by your local Bürgeramt, depending on your circumstances
Non-EU citizens may also need to provide their visa or residence documentation, depending on their nationality and immigration status.
What Happens After Registration?
Once your registration has been completed, you will receive a registration certificate confirming your registered address.
Your tax ID is a separate document. It is generally sent to you by post after your address has been registered and is needed for purposes such as starting employment and handling tax-related matters.
