Why ECTS Compatibility and the VPD Matter for International Students
For international students who want to study in Germany, two important aspects of the application process are checking whether your previous studies are compatible with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) and finding out whether you need a VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation).
These factors can determine whether your application meets the formal and academic requirements of your chosen program.
Understanding ECTS
The ECTS system makes academic achievements more comparable across European countries. German universities may use ECTS to assess whether:
- Your previous degree matches the required German academic level
- You have enough credits for a Bachelor's or Master's program
- Your completed modules match the academic requirements of the program

What Is a VPD?
A VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) is a document issued by uni-assist for universities that use the VPD procedure.
It provides an assessment of your submitted educational documents and may indicate:

- How your grades were converted into the German grading system
- Whether your educational background meets the formal requirements for the selected university or program
A VPD does not replace the university's own admission decision. The university makes the final decision about whether you are admitted.

- The relevant information on the uni-assist website
If a VPD is required, apply early because processing can take several weeks.
