Chancenkarte: Your Visa for Job Hunting in Germany

The Chancenkarte ("Opportunity Card") is a residence permit that allows qualified individuals from non-EU countries to come to Germany without a job offer and search for employment on-site.

What Is the Chancenkarte?

The Chancenkarte (§§ 20a and 20b Residence Act) allows you to:

  • Stay in Germany for up to 12 months to look for a job
  • Work part-time for up to 20 hours per week during your stay
  • Participate in trial employment for up to two weeks per employer

Its goal is to make the German labor market more accessible to international professionals.

Eligibility Criteria

You can qualify for the Chancenkarte in two ways:

1. Direct Qualification as a Skilled Worker

  • Recognized university degree or vocational qualification of at least 2 years
  • Basic German language skills (A1) or English language skills (B2)
  • Proof of sufficient financial resources

2. Points-Based System

You need at least 6 points, which can be awarded for:

  • Qualifications and work experience
  • Language skills
  • Age, particularly if you are under 35
  • Connection to Germany, such as previous stays
  • Integration potential

Application Steps

  1. Create an account on the portal and, if required, TLScontact.
  2. Upload the required documents, including your motivation letter.
  3. Book an appointment at the Visa Application Center (VAC).
  4. Provide your fingerprints and pay the application fee.
  5. Wait for the embassy's decision.

Processing time: Approximately 2–4 weeks.

What to Include in Your Motivation Letter

Your motivation letter should explain:

  • Your target region and industry
  • Your job search strategy
  • Your accommodation and financial plan
  • Your plans for recognition of your qualifications, if required

Extension and Future Options

If you find a suitable job during your stay, you may be able to:

  • Apply for a new residence permit, such as a residence permit for skilled workers
  • Continue your stay if you meet the requirements for another residence permit
