A Guide for EU and Non-EU Citizens

Germany offers international students high-quality education, cultural diversity, and attractive living conditions. But the path to enrollment isn't the same for everyone. This guide walks you through it step by step – from choosing a study program to final enrollment.

Phase 1: Choosing a Study Program and Researching Universities

For all applicants:

  • Choose your study program – Bachelor's, Master's, or other programs. Pay attention to language, content, and admission requirements.
  • Find a university – Universities, universities of applied sciences, or art and music academies each have their own profile and application process.
  • Check deadlines:
    • Summer semester: usually until January 15
    • Winter semester: usually until July 15

Phase 2: Preparing Your Application

EU Citizens

  • University entrance qualification – Your school-leaving certificate is usually recognized directly.
  • Application – Apply directly to the university or via hochschulstart.de for Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy.
  • Required documents – Certificates, CV, motivation letter if required, and a language certificate in German or English, depending on the program.

Non-EU Citizens

  • Document evaluation via uni-assist – Many universities require a preliminary review of your documents.
  • Application – Via uni-assist.de or directly to the university.
  • Additional documents – Language certificates such as TestDaF, DSH, IELTS, or TOEFL and, where applicable, an APS certificate, for example for applicants from China, India, or Vietnam.

Phase 3: Submitting Your Application

  • Use the online portal – Most universities offer digital application platforms.
  • Upload documents – Follow the format requirements, including PDF format and maximum file size.

Phase 4: Admission and Preparation

If You Are Admitted

  • Receive your admission letter – It includes information about enrollment, deadlines, and the start of studies.
  • Find accommodation – Student dorms, shared flats, or private rentals. Start early.
  • Schedule your enrollment appointment – Online or in person, depending on the university.

If You Are Rejected

  • Consider alternatives – Studienkolleg, another university, or a different program.

Phase 5: Visa and Entry to Germany

For non-EU citizens only.

  • Apply for a visa – Apply for a student visa at the German embassy. You will typically need your admission letter, proof of financial resources such as a blocked account, and proof of health insurance.
  • Plan your arrival – Book your flight, secure accommodation, and arrange pickup if needed.
  • Prepare administrative steps – Register your address, apply for a residence permit, and open a bank account.
